Defiance

by Lalli, she/her

This piece is a visual depiction of joy as resistance. I faced discrimination, bullying and loss of employment over the last year. The experiences were traumatic and distressing. The painting is a representation of how I have resisted oppression and coercion to embrace expression, creativity and joy. The colours used are bright and vivid. Cyan was selected for its representation of openness, orange depicts joy and pink portrays healing. Although the colours take up the minority of space on the heavy dark canvas, they are unmistakably the focal point. The development of my art is not despite, but because of the adversity.
