This work excavates my conflict with legibility. As a global south migrant living with chronic mental unwellness, I am routinely expected to disclose my traumas and distress to health services, the police, and the Home Office. The disclosures demand less fact and more performance, judging my recitals of self on arbitrary scales of severity, vulnerability, and threat. These words are taken from real interactions with state services during an immigration application. The images are scenes overlaid with their distorted selves, representing not what is but what the state (im)poses to see.
